WE have got the yellow ego.

Yes, friends, the annual Inter-Hall Games (IHG) is once again here! Get ready for more action from both our sportsmen and sportswomen in the following months as the first leg of preparations currently take off. In the last week or so, both male and female captains of their various sports have been conducting trials to pick their new squads for this year’s games, and things are on their way to heating up.
If you are a freshman and have no clue what IHG is or what it means to Eusoff, let me explain. IHG is inarguably the most significant event in the calendar of events for the hall. This is not to say that any other event is any less important; but in terms of what is at stake for Eusoff, IHG definitely takes the prize for holding the most weight – it is with pride that I say that Eusoff is a sports hall; being crowned champions four times in a row is by no means an easy feat. One might say that it is the culture and reputation that brings in the talent, batch after batch, but as much as these stars will win matches for us, it is the hard work and dedication of those who genuinely train hard from scratch to become essential players in their respective sports, that wins us the championship. In the next few months, trainings will pick up speed and level up in intensity as our captains and players prepare to give the other halls a run for their money, blood and sweat. Get to know them; look out for the faces of our captains around hall after their photo shoots and interviews are done in the coming weeks.
As much as the sportsmen and women are the ones on the field, pitch, or court playing the matches while the rest of us sport-disinclined mortals watch on the sidelines, never assume for a moment that you are a mere spectator. The greatest teams in sports have achieved great things because they played as a team, cheered each other on and helped each other through times of adversity; and in Eusoff Hall, we are all part of this team, sportsman or not. Our sportsmen in the past have won not solely based on skill alone, but because of the strong support the rest of the hall has always given, in presence and in spirit. So, as much as it might seem too early to say this, don’t forget to come down and support our sportsmen and women when the time comes for us to unite as a hall! Cheer your hearts out for them as they do us proud again this year. Go Eusoff!

Crisis of time in Varsity life
Posted in: Uncategorized | Comments (0)
“Time waits for no one.” “Time is worth money.” “Time is limited and fleeting.” “Die, not enough time!” “ Oh no, how come its Friday already!” These are all very familiar and frightening words that we constantly hear in our lives. Time management always seem to be a stumbling block and never-ending source of misery for all us normal mortal students ( different from the high-flying, super smart, super dedicated, exceptionally talented students out there). From the moment we entered the world of schooling, we have been in a perennial rat-race, filled with homework, tests, projects, CCAs and our other “entertainment”. We never seem to have enough time to accomplish what we want. At least in my own experience, it always starts out with the best intentions, clearing a whole day, turning down appointments to go out and party with friends, staying in your hall room, reading room, central library or even starbucks café; writing a list of assignments and projects to be done, bringing along all the necessary notes, organizing them, and finally starting to study. However, somewhere along this route, it is so easy to get distracted, so easy to change your mind about studying, doing what is important and falling into the trap of watching drama, going out with friends, talking and just generally having fun. It happens. It strikes again, time and time again. No matter how hard you swear to yourself and loudly proclaim to the whole world that you will forsake all “earthy pursuits” and study, you somehow never manage to finish studying or finish an assignment before the dateline. And then, you start feeling that inevitable sense of guilt.
Well, fear not my fellow Eusoffians, all these emotions that you are feeling are entirely normal. Here, I am going to list out some hopefully helpful reminders on how to plan and manage your time wisely. Firstly, to actually start planning your time wisely, you must first look at your life and decide if you are happy with it or you really need to change it. If you are cruising by your uni life, have sufficient sleep, lots of time for studies, CCAs, friends and feel bored for lack of things to do ( well done, pat yourself on the back, you belong to the extremely rare group of people), you do not need saving at all, in fact you should bottle up your success story and sell it to the masses, you will surely become an instant millionaire. If you belong to the frantic group of people grasping for more time and sacrificing your sleep, don’t worry, you are not at the point of no return and you are certainly not alone. All you need is the willpower to make the change. Start prioritizing what is important to you, do the difficult assignments and tedious readings as soon as possible, never ever procrastinate because it will become a bad habit. Lastly, hold on tight, do not give up and just try your best, put aside all distractions, lock up your laptop, throw away your magazines and hide your handphone!
Whatever happens, as long as you tried to adhere to your schedule, do not waste time feeling guilty about straying, just accept it and try harder the next time. A second spent unhappy is a second wasted. It feels funny giving advice about time management when I am one of the many caught up in its trap and struggling for survival but lets all try together to control our time. Let there be days where we can hold our head high and say with pride “ I have done all my tutorials and studied for my tests in advance! I am so free!”
Good luck people!

Eusoff, from a Eusoffian Eye
Posted in: Uncategorized | Comments (0)
Eusoff our great hall thee we praise
Swelling forth our mighty chorus
We will strive through all our days
Fight to keep the torch ablaze
For many years since 1958, true to the Eusoff Anthem, Eusoffians have strived to keep the torch ablaze. With every passing generation, Eusoff has evolved and provided new avenues for the Eusoffians to learn, grow and live in the truest sense of the words. The freshmen who have enrolled at Eusoff every year have brought in their own unique strengths and straits which have been constituent elements of the ever so vibrant Eusoff culture.
The event that remains the most memorable for all freshmen would be the Freshmen Orientation Camp where the freshmen get to savour their very first Eusoff experience. It definitely was an amazing experience for me as a freshman, to meet others who had also enrolled in Eusoff for the first time and were also trying to find their niche just as I was. Apart from the fun filled games, it was also an opportunity to make new friends, form new bonds and interact with the seniors. These new-formed friendships and interactions have been a solid basis for my life in Eusoff and have been a guiding force in my choice of opportunities such as Co-Curricular Activities. Jing Ho, a fellow Eusoffian and a freshman reading Mechanical Engineering, shares the same sentiments as me. “I find Eusoff brimming with energy. There are so many activities and I will never get tired of Eusoff life.” he says.
Another aspect of Eusoff hall which contributes largely to the growth and the enrichment of the freshmen is the immense warmth and the undying support of the seniors, which I fervently believe every freshman is extremely grateful for. Since the orientation, the seniors have strived to build a warm rapport with the freshmen and provide necessary advice and guidance, not just pertaining to hall life, but also to academics and personal life. “Freshmen need to feel welcome and the entire hall should feel oneness”, were the thoughts of Neeti Shiva a senior Eusoffian and a fourth year student reading Psychology on being asked how she felt about welcoming the freshmen. Having been a resident of Eusoff Hall since year 1 and having been a part of many Co-Curricular Activities, she feels that Eusoff has evolved in providing a holistic experience to the Eusoffians, especially in terms of new committees and leadership positions. She also highlights the importance of being involved in the activities from the 1st year itself and not mixing friendship with work, to gain a maximum Eusoff experience. “Eusoff has been a home away from home and it has been a wonderful journey”, she sums it up.

Life of a Eusoffian freshman.

“Oh you’re staying in Eusoff? You must be really into sports.”
That’s the first reaction I get from pretty much everyone when I tell them that I’m in Eusoff. Undoubtedly, Eusoff has established a firm reputation as the sports powerhouse. And now that I’m a part of Eusoff I can certainly see why. As the term draws to a close, Eusoff is finally settling into a pace. The entire hall is buzzing with talk about the DP dances, the drama script and of course, the Inter Hall Games.
The Inter Block Games saw everyone coming down to try out different sports. The blocks were pitted against each other sports ranging from Road Relay to Takraw. I found myself expecting that knock on my door every evening as my floor mates would come and ask me to play for IBG. And as the captains promised before every match, the games were indeed fun and (probably) a good way to scout talent for IHG. As for me, it made me realize ‘basketball star’ is not a viable career option for me. Nonetheless the games were fun and had me looking forwards to the Inter Hall Games.
Inter Hall Games, the words that get every Eusoffian’s blood pumping. Be it due to age old rivalries between the halls or a matter of pride at having a winning streak, The IHG feels like our very own nationals. After hearing the many IHG stories from seniors, about last year’s “epic” floor ball final or the defeat of our friendly neighbors, I have to say I’m getting pretty excited about the games too. And as hall life picks up the pace, everyone is settling into a routine of hectic days followed by supper at Ameen. The hall spirit is building up with each passing day and I can see a busier, charged up and exciting semester ahead of us. Just a few days back I walked back into hall well past midnight after a murderous day when I saw my senior rushing off for dance practice. She responded to my incredulous look with: “Welcome to Hall!”. Well, it has been a great start and just as all the other freshmen, I’m eager to see what comes next.

Eusoff Hall Orientation Camp 11/12
Posted in: Orientation | Comments (0)
Clock – perpetual ticking. Ideas – formed and reformed. Words – written and erased.
These three amorphous things were lumped together to form the proposal of what would be the Orientation Camp 11/12 of Eusoff Hall, NUS. This time round, the Orientation Committee is headed by Neesha with her team of quirky sophomores-to-be that recently just finished organizing the Eggposure Camp for the incoming freshies. It was a creative blend of bringing the game, Angry Birds into real life while for the game enthusiast, they were quick to imitate the Angry Birds characters, sound effects and storyline – as seen from everyone (and yes, that includes the organizing committee, the OGLs and the freshies).
All the respective OG (both pigs and birds) had witty cheers and skids that tied in closely to the game that had been the craze of the world of late. It was indeed amusing and fun to watch everyone join in the role-play while yours truly, unfortunately, took a full day into the Eggposure camp to realize the theme of the camp was an imitation of THAT particular iphone game. So anyway, getting back on track, the Orientation Committee as of June 10th is currently into their 2nd week of break – in which thereafter, would be “chiong-ing” their proposals for the Orientation Camp 11/12 that would introduce the freshies into the world of Eusoff Hall. Sexciting isn’t it? And no, that isn’t a typo!
The bonding between the freshmen and seniors would be up to this Committee – on their itinerary of the camp and also up to the OGLs – who, I heard, could be very into HTHT (hence the tightening of newly made friendship ropes). So, for the rest of the Eusoffians who are enjoying their holiday in various continents – don’t forget that these bunch of people, are in charge of kick-starting a memorable hall life to the incoming juniors and that because of them, the freshies would be more inclined to socializing, mixing around the five blocks and alas, with you.

We are the Champions… AGAIN!
Posted in: Sports | Comments (2)
The Inter-Hall Games (IHG) 10/11 ended with a bang for Eusoff Hall as we were crowned treble champions, sweeping the Male, Female and Overall Champion titles. This made the IHG closing ceremony an especially joyous occasion for Eusoffians as we celebrated the victory of yet another IHG Champion Hall title!
The athletes and supporters from the six halls of residence gathered at the SRC on 21st February for the official closing ceremony. Organized by the convening committee from Kent Ridge Hall, the early birds were treated to a sneak peak of the exciting cheerleading routine that was to be performed later by the KR Steppers. The ceremony soon kicked off with the presentation of medals to the winners of the various sports events. It was a moment of glory to all the winners who have fought hard through the rounds to emerge champions in their various sports. Eusoffians cheered out loud and proud chanting “Eusoff Hall” again and again. The presentation of the three trophies was met with thunderous reception from the yellow side. Although we tied with Temasek Hall for the Female Champion, the sense of euphoria was none the lesser. In the heat of the celebration, the KR Steppers stepped up (pun intended) to bring the mood up a few notches by wowing the audience with jaw-dropping somersaults in the air. As the closing ceremony drew to a close, the Eusoff contingent surrounded our Sports Director, Jia Kai, who was holding the Overall Champion trophy high up for all to see. With all the gusto they could muster, Eusoffians belted out the “Eusoff Fighter” cheer at the top of their lungs. It was a cheer that conjured up mixed emotions among the athletes, with the sheer excitement of victory on one hand and the thought of missing the hours of bonding with fellow athletes on the other. The celebration was topped off with the ritualistic jog around the track with the Eusoff flag being waved proudly in the air.
In addition, Eusoff had its own internal closing ceremony held at night. Our hall master gave a short and sweet speech to congratulate us on our achievements. Next, awards were given out to recognize the efforts of teams and individual sportsmen and sportswomen, such as the “Best Rookie” award and many more. The night ended on a high note with Eusoff bands churning out melodic tunes and rocking the infectious drum beats. The ceremony may have come to an end, but the night was young and the well-deserved party continued well into dawn. – CJY

Dramafest 2011 – L.O.L.
Posted in: Culture | Comments (5)
The evening of February the 9th ushered in Dramafest 2011 – an explosion of thespian talent from the 6 different residential Halls of NUS. Produced by Lakshmi Sameera and Aruna Narandran, the L.O.L.-themed celebration of theatre was emceed by Mehul Mangalvedhekar and Neeti Shiva, all from Eusoff Hall. Other major participants from Eusoff were Andre Kumar, who directed the first play of the evening, Aruna, Charis, Vedika, He Ye, Jingyu, Chen Yu, Paul who acted in two plays and Xavier who wrote and directed the last play in addition to acting in it. Kent Ridge Hall planted its flag in the publicity sector. King Edward VII Hall handled the logistics as well as the lights, sound and stage along with Raffles Hall, whose residents managed the sets and props, while Temasek Hall and Sheares Hall provided backstage crew.
All of this ensured that when the audience took their seats at 8 pm, the air was rife with energy and enthusiasm. The first play of the evening ‘L.O.L.’, a humorous take on a colourful assortment of people stuck in an after-life-limbo after fitting deaths in line with the meaningless ways in which they led their lives, took the audience by storm. It was followed by ‘Last of Lusts’, which dealt with the morbid events that befell a group of friends with sexual crises. ‘Lamentations of Love’ showcased the dilemma of a young man compelled to find a female date by the evening stuck in a dating agency that offers him only males. This was followed by ‘Lord of the Longkangs’ – a local slapstick comedy about a girl who fell asleep on a bus after work and woke up to find herself trapped in a drain. ‘Lead or Lead’ was a hilarious take on the power balance in a relationship where one half of the couple worked for the other. Between plays, Mehul and Neeti had the crowd in splits with their witty quips and their light-hearted jibes at each other.
The effort put into Dramafest was laudable as it required synchronisation between a cast and crew that spanned across 6 different halls, and rehearsals had to be accommodated around the different hall productions, Chingay rehearsals and other various hall commitments. Despite the stiff competition between halls in events such as IHG, the level of harmony between the participants of Dramafest was really admirable. This is one of the few events that bring halls together, rather than pitting them against each other. Eusoff produced Dramafest this year with great flair, putting up an enthralling and rou\sing show.

TILL DEATH DO US PART
Posted in: Culture | Comments (1)
There is just one word to describe the expression portrayed by the crowd as they left the UCC last Friday night after a thundering experience and that is SPELLBOUND. This year’s Dance Production was a spectacular event.
The Guest of Honour for Eusoff Hall’s Dance Production 2011 was Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor, North West CDC ,Member of Parliament for Bukit Panjang.

After his arrival at UCC around 7pm last Friday , the whole auditorium set itself to witness amazing creative talents in display. From dance to music to drama to lights to sounds, “Till Death Do us Part”, took the crowd on a murder mystery ride.
The storyline revolved around three characters, Bradley Beker the President by Paul, his wife Bernedette by Neeti and Christina Curtis, the President’s mistress, played by Sara.
The hilarious “Rocking Riley”, the man who had just too many questions, was brought alive by none other than our “Oskar” Myungsik. Mehul played the good cop Dan and Marc Chia played the role of Malcolm, Bradley’s mentor.
The dance performances were beautifully choreographed and it left the audience in sheer appreciation of the myriad of talent in Eusoff Hall. And it doesn’t stop at the performers.
The costumes were wonderful and one can expect no less when the wardrobe is in the hands of Leong Pei Theng (Head), Chew Shi Hao (Chief Designer) and Ou Yong Hua (Assistant designer).
It was a proud evening for our Production Team, led gallantly by Nikhil Mohanan.
The Stage management team, the sound team and especially the lights team deserve a special mention at this point as they were the true heroes leading from the back. The sizzling and romantic ambience created with pink lights and the silk touch from Sara’s voice was a pleasure for the audience.
Finally the Celebration dance, choreographed by Red Seo had so much energy that people who sat firm, had to start tapping their feet! The performance ended with a standing ovation and it must have been a proud moment for our Maser Tan Tin Wee to sit along with his esteemed friends and show them the passion and talent Eusoff is all about. – GKR

Hall Awareness Week
Posted in: Welfare | Comments (0)
Have you noticed the pretty bright lights placed outside the dining hall? Do you know what they signify? If you guessed Hall Awareness Week, you are absolutely correct! During Week 11 of the Academic calendar, the Student Affairs Committee organized the event, Hall Awareness Week, which was aimed at increasing residents’ knowledge about Eusoff Hall. A range of activities were organized including:
1) Block Competition: Huge boards were placed in the dining hall for each block to write certain interesting facts about Eusoff Hall they know, and the block with the most interesting facts would win the “Most Aware Block Prize”. The competition proved to be a huge hit among Eusoffians and each block’s board was filled with colorful interesting facts. It seemed a difficult task for the organizers to decide who should win the competition but can you guess which block won eventually? Do you remember which block board had the extremely cute Pikachu drawn on? Yes, congratulations to B Block winning yet another competition (aside from the EH Got Talent competition), snagging the “Most Aware Block Prize”!

2) Individual Competition: A game station was placed in the dining hall and residents who were able to answer correctly three questions about Eusoff, got a chance to throw darts on a Eusoff Map. Upon hitting the assigned spot, they would be given a prize. Again, this game combined fun with increasing knowledge about the hall, and many Eusoffians had fun throwing the darts and getting to learn more about Eusoff Hall in the process.
Hall Awareness Week and the activities included not only served its objective of raising residents’ awareness of the Hall and the activities going on, but also, provided a lot of fun and entertainment to hall residents. The boards provided also allowed for a lot of interactivity and bonding not just among residents of the same block, but also across blocks. All in all, Hall Awareness week is definitely an event that all Eusoffians would enjoy and look forward for each year. — OYP

EH Got Talent!
Posted in: Culture | Comments (0)
The residents of Eusoff Hall were treated to a feast of talent performances on the night of 21st October. Presented in the style of a TV news report – hilarious headlines, advertisements and performances fought for the limelight. Here’s a recap for those who unfortunately missed it!
The show kicked off with Block A’s parody of famous MRT videos on Youtube. Ip Man and Bollywood moves performed to a human pole made the original videos playing in the background that much funnier. We then got to settle down to the band Soliloquy’s soothing rendition of “Arms of An Angel”, following which they upped the tempo with top hits “Falling For You” and “21 Guns”. Block E followed up with another parody of the viral Panda commercial. With the burly panda terrorising all who do wrong to E-Blockers, surely no one will dare say “No” to them again!

The Eusoff Choir - PHOTO : EW
The Eusoff Choir then showed off their beautiful harmony of voices to the uplifting and inspirational song “Do I Make You Proud?” Block C’s talented band rocked their versions of “Heart of the Matter” (The Eagles) and “The Only Exception” (Paramore), garnering the enthusiastic support from their block mates that earned them the “Most Supportive Block”. Eusoff’s very own dance crew showed their sleek moves in a rousing hip hop dance mix of BoA and Adam Lambert. The Elixir percussion band showed impeccable unity in their beats, ending together perfectly.
During the intermissions, news updates from The Noose brought new perspectives to current affairs. There were none too few jokes injected into this newscast, including a report on Paris Hilton buying over Liverpool FC and making its players parade half naked in hot pink underwear as their new jersey. Compliments to Pamela (Blk C), for her spot-on impersonation of Ris Low.
Thereafter, almost all of Block D’s residents congregated onstage to perform renditions of “Collide” and “I’m yours”. Fortunately, disharmony and off-key melodies were a no-show as they entertained the crowd with their dance moves that were impromptu yet apt. The strong community spirit displayed clinched them the ‘Most Enthusiastic Block’ award.

Eusoff B Block Performance - PHOTO : EW
Next, Eusoff A Cappella delivered charming performances with their resonant and well-complementing chorals, reflecting their effort in perfecting their pieces. This was followed by arguably the highlight of the night, staged by Block B. They parodied talent competitions with their version of “Block Got Talent” along with celebrity judges like Simon Kaopei. The first feature was the “TemaSICK Brothers” who hammed it up with the classic Pokemon theme song. Their mediocre act earned them the punchline of the day: “There is a reason why you keep trying but haven’t won for 3 straight years”. The Burping Man shocked and titillated with his amazing ability to burp in rhythm to classical music. His disgustingly adept control of his airways drew uproarious laughter. The last contestant, Sexy N Sobre Dancers (SNSD), blew our minds with their provocative dance. With all the right moves, they cemented their place as champions in the faux competition. Eliciting the most laughs from the audience, it was no surprise when Block B was announced as the winner of the night.
The stellar quality of performance continued as Digression performed covers of songs by Lady Antebellum (‘Need You Now’), Maroon 5 (‘Misery’) and The Script (‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’). Front woman Thilaiga R. won the crowd over with her powerhouse vocals, not forgetting the rest of the band who coordinated the instrumentals superbly. They were so well-received that they did an encore with a short tune from The Big Bang Theory.
The moonlit soiree concluded with a prize presentation where all the blocks were commended for their efforts. This year’s EH Got talent was definitely a hit, with many being bowled over by the talents that fellow Eusoffians had been withholding. It was certainly an affirmation of the declaration ‘Eusoff Got Talent’. — CJY & KJY
