Senior Common Room Committee

Eusoff Hall is administered by a Master who is appointed by the University. The Master is assisted by both resident and non-resident Fellows and together they form the Senior Common Room Committee (SCRC). The Fellows work closely with the Master in matters of discipline and internal administration of the Hall.

There are 5 Resident Fellows who function as advisors, mentors, disciplinarian and counselors to the Hall's residents. Residents are encouraged to approach them with any problems they may have.

 

A/P Tan Tin Wee
Master of Eusoff Hall

Tan Tin Wee was educated in Cambridge (Biochemistry BA), London (UCL – Molecular Biology and Biotechnology) and Edinburgh (recombinant chlamydial vaccine) and is currently a Member of the Institute of Biology (CBiol). He is presently an Associate Professor with the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine and Master of Eusoff Hall of Residence at the National University of Singapore (NUS) where he has been working for the past 14 years. During his tour of duty in NUS, he has achieved international stature in two major fields: Internet Technologies and Bioinformatics, distinguishing himself as a technology pioneer and inventor, academic, scientist, scientific and technology leader and activist, technopreneur and community worker.

 

Dr Peter Kew Min Shen
Resident Fellow of Block A

Dr Peter Kew Min Shen is the Head of Physical Science, IT & Engineering, Technology Transfer & licensing of NUS Industry and Technology Relations Office. He is also currently involved in the establishment of Eusoff Enterprise. Prior to this, Dr Kew has more than 10 years working experience in the industries in UK, Germany, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore. Dr Kew obtained his Bachelor of Science (Hons.) and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Aberdeen, UK. Dr Kew is a devoted community worker, serving as a Treasurer and Committee Member of the Kembangan/Jalan Senang Neighbourhood Committee. In addition, he is also the Chairman of the Hakka Methodist Church Music Ministry and President of the Hakka Methodist Church Adult Choir. Dr Kew, his wife Amy Hui-Chun and son, Amos joined the Hall in January 2002.

 

A/P Ho Chee Kong
Deputy Head of Eusoff Hall
Resident Fellow of Block B

Dr Ho Chee Kong is currently Associate Director and Artist Faculty at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. Prior to this, he has taught Music and Technology at the University Scholars Programme. As a composer, he has been involved in various music projects in Singapore and has received commissions from MITA, NAC, NUS, the Singapore National Youth Orchestra, the Singapore Philharmonic Chamber Choir, the Huqin Quartet, and many other music artistes. His areas of interest include designs in digital music, issues of music in modern society, music and organization, and music in multi-media productions. He also holds appointments in various music and arts committees and institutions such as NAC and NAFA, and is the Music Advisor for the Huqin Quartet and the Paradigm Ensemble. He has been with the Hall as Resident Fellow of Block B since June 2000, together with his wife, Dr Lee and two children, Rachel and Cristel.

 

Dr Mark Emmanuel
Resident Fellow of Block C

Dr Mark Emmanuel is very much a product of NUS. After graduating from the NUS History Department with an Honours degree, he spent a few years at the Ministry of Defence before returning to NUS. In 2006 he was awarded a PhD in History from the Australian National University, and is currently an Assistant Professor in the History Department specialising in Southeast Asian history, specifically Malaysian history. Dr Emmanuel joined Eusoff Hall in January 2007 as the Resident Fellow of Block C. His hobbies include reading, watching DVDs and rearing aquarium fish. He lives in Eusoff with his wife, Joanna and their two sons, Gerard and Ciaran.

 

A/P Victor Tan Wong
Resident Fellow Block D

A.P. Victor Tan received his B.Sc (1st Class Hons) degree from NUS and his Ph.D. degree from UCLA. He has been lecturing in the Department of Mathematics for more than 10 years. He has won the University Excellent Teachers Award for 4 consecutive years from 2002 to 2005. He plays the violin and writs scripts for Mandarin stage plays. He joined the hall as Resident Fellow since August 2005, together with his wife Sharon and daughter Dionne.

 

A/P Leung Ka Hin
Domestic Bursar of Eusoff Hall
Resident Fellow of Block E

Assoc Prof Leung Ka Hin is currently the Deputy Head at the Department of Mathematics. He obtained his Bachelor of Science (1st Class Hons) from the University of Hong Kong before pursuing his Ph.D at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. Prior to joining NUS, he was a teaching assistant at the University of Hong Kong and the University of California, Berkeley. He enjoys music, tennis, soccer and table tennis. He has been with the Hall as Resident Fellow of Block E since January 2002, together with his wife, Rena and two sons.

 

Prof Kirpal Singh

Prof Kirpal Singh obtained his PH.D. in English from the university of Adelaide, Australia in 1980 where he was a Colombo Plan Scholar. Until 1991 he taught at the National University of Singapore and was then invited to move to NTU to help set-up the BA Programme there. For 5 years (1993 - 1998) he served as Head of the Division of Literature & Drama and initiated several significant programmes as well as a thoroughly revised syllabus. Prof Kirpal has always been an active participant of cultural and literary affairs, whether within the University environment or within the larger public domain. As a writer, critic and scholar, he is among the most powerful voices to emerge from this part of the world and is constantly sought by international bodies and universities to present papers and sit on various boards. In 1999 he was invited to join the new Singapore Management University, where he co-ordinates and teaches the Creative Thinking Programme. In recent years he has been invited to give Keynote Papers and Plenary Speeches on issues pertaining to Creativity, Innovation, and Leadership Management.

 

Mrs Elsie Foh

Mrs Elsie Foh is a NUS Alumnus as well as a Eusoff Alumnus. She is currently Managing Director & Chief Operating Officer of Consumer Banking, DBS Bank, Singapore. In addition, she is a director of DBS Asset Management Ltd and Network for Electronic Transfers (S) Pte Ltd. She has two children. She has been the Non-Resident Fellow of Eusoff Hall since 1992.

 

Mrs Joanna Wong

Mrs Joanna Wong was formerly a Resident Fellow with Eusoff College from 1964 to 1965, after staying there as a resident from 1959 to 1963. She is an expert exponent of Chinese opera, and was a recipient of the Cultural Medallion Award in 1981. She has extensive experience in community work and has served as the Chairman of the Kreta Ayer Community Club Women’s Executive Committee for over 35 years. She was conferred the Public Service Star (BBM) by the President of the Republic of Singapore in 1974 for her contribution to community service and was appointed a Justice of the Peace (JP) in October 1998. She is a member of the Women's Executive Committees Co-ordinating Council (now re-named the Women's Intergrative Council -WIN Council). Mrs Wong was the Registrar at NUS until her retirement in 2001. She is married to Mr Leslie Wong with two children.

 

Mr Francis Xavier

Mr Francis Xavier served as President of the Eusoff College JCRC from 1986 to 1987, and graduated from the NUS Law Faculty with his LLB (Honours) in 1988. A distinguished debater, he has participated as a member of the NUS debating team in the SBC Tertiary Debate Series, Australasian Debating Series and the International Varsity Challenge Series. As a member of the NUS Law Moot Team, he participated in the Philip C Jessup International Moot Court Competition in 1988. His team emerged World Runners-Up. He currently heads the Commercial Litigation Practice Group at Rajah & Tann.

 

Mrs Helen Chew

Mrs Helen Chew obtained her Bachelor in Business Administration from the University of Singapore in 1977, and was a resident and JCRC member in Dunearn Road Hostel in her student days. An outgoing person, she has worked for a number of years with Great Eastern Life, and now works with a major financial firm. Helen swims and plays tennis, table tennis and badminton.

 

Dr Robert Goh Ee Kiat

Dr Robert Goh is a high-altitude mountaineer, mountaineering mentor, polar explorer, aerospace scientist, and public speaker. He climbs high mountains, especially those in the Himalayas above 8,000m, with little or no support, including Everest, which is 8,850m high, or 29,035ft. Hence the name of his company, 29,000ft (www.29000ft.net). He is now preparing to climb Everest and K2 without oxygen.

As Singapore's leading high-altitude mountaineering mentor; he trains and directs -- free of charge -- select groups of young enthusiastic climbers to give them the opportunity to learn the sport. Ever willing to take on the toughest challenges, he was the Co-leader of the First Singapore Antarctica Expedition 2000. With his team, he skied 1,100km to the South Pole, man-hauling a sled with 100kg of supplies for 55 days. Dr Goh is also a scientist and has a doctorate in aerodynamics. He spent 12 years as an aerospace scientist, during which he worked on cutting-edge technologies in the aerospace industry, including fighter aircraft and un-manned systems.

Robert has spoken on his various adventures to diverse audiences, inspiring them with his experiences and relating them to corporate and managerial situations.

 

Ms Ovidia Yu

Ms Ovidia Yu is an alumnus of the Arts and Social Sciences Faculty, NUS. Since her start with the NUS Literary Society, she has had two books published and over thirty plays performed in Singapore and abroad, including ‘The Woman in a Tree on the Hill’ the first and so far only Singapore play to receive an Edinburgh Fringe First award. Ms Yu has received the Singapore Youth Award for Literature, the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Award and the Fulbright Award.

 

Mrs Tan Suan Imm

Mrs Tan Suan Imm is a retired school principal, married to a private medical practitioner. On her retirement after 33 years in the Education Service, she did a short stint in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Deputy Chief of Protocol. She is currently an honorary Counsellor in the Social Development Unit, Ministry of Community Development, an Honorary Fellow of Victoria Hall of residence, Victoria School, and a Resource Person in the Lee Kuan Yew School of Policy Studies. She remains active in and engaged with the National University of Singapore’s Senior Alumni, keeps fit, travels, romances the computer and enjoys being a doting grandmother to her 4 grandchildren ages from 4 to 15.

 

Ms Lim Bee Lum

Ms Lim Bee Lum is no stranger to Eusoffians as she has served as the longest Resident Fellow from 1972-2000.

She is currently a non-resident fellow of Eusoff Hall.

She is closely associated with the NUS Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society where she serves on the Board of Directors. Her other activities include serving on the committee of the Senior Circle of the National University of Singapore Society and the Women's Committee of the Singapore National Cooperative Federation.

In recognition of her services to the cooperative movement, she was conferred the Commendation Medal by the Singapore National Cooperatives Federation.

Over and above her many activities, she still finds time to travel and go round shooting with her camera. She is indeed an avid traveller and keen photographer.
