Handball Men Captain Interview
MEN: Like his female counter-part, he stands taller than most at 1.85m. Affectionately known as ‘Yogi Bear’, Chia Yong Kai is a well-loved senior who bravely heads this year’s Handball team. A devoted boyfriend whose girlfriend is currently overseas (awww…), he now devotes his time to bringing our boys to greater heights!
Leon: Tell us more about Handball in Eusoff.
Yong Kai: We have been improving steadily over the years. When I first came to Eusoff, I never heard of any Handball team that made it past the first round. However, that very year we managed to get into the semis and we have managed to keep that up ever since. It is one of my key priorities that after I have left, Eusoff is able to maintain this standard and not go back to not making it past the first round.
L: What goals have you set for the team this year?
YK: What no Eusoffian has dreamt of before, the IHG finals. It all depends on the draw, but we need to make it to the semis at the very least, or else it would be a step backwards. That’s the goal of the team but the objective is to recruit fresh blood. We need new players to fill our shoes, not saying that our shoes are big or small, but if there’s no one, the shoes can’t be filled at all.
L: Opponents to look out for?
YK: As usual, RH. I don’t really know much about the other teams. Sheares could be quite strong as well. Then again, it’s not really important. We just have to do our best. It’s quite easy to rise up in Handball.
L: What role do you play in the team?
YK: As the captain, I’m more or less the motivator of the team and the coordinator of the trainings and I take care of the admin side of things. On the court, I’m usually the “Pivot, it’s my area of specialization. But I can play any other positions as well, including the wing.
L: Is there anything you like to share about yourself?
YK: I’m 24F (??!! Not funny ah Yong Kai…), year 3 SOC student. I enjoy playing handball and basketball. I have also grown a fond love for reading books and listening to classics. It makes me a happier person. I am also going to venture into Golf. I frequent the driving range, and I’m getting my handicap soon. As you can see, a lot of activities I do are very cultured.
