Handball

Brief introduction to Handball

Handball is an extremely popular sport in Europe, where it was founded. In fact, statistically, it is the most popular game in Europe. Although Handball is still not widely played in Singapore, it is growing quickly and a lot more people are becoming aware of the sport and picking it up.

The objective of Handball is to score more goals than their opponents in a given time. They score by shooting the ball into the net of their opponent’s goal. Players are not allowed to step into the opponent’s “D”, marked by a white semi-circle around the goalposts. Therefore, to score, players have to shoot outside the “D” unless they jump into the “D” and shoot whilst still in mid-air.

Each team consists of 7 players including the goalkeeper. The positions include 2 wingers, 2 second (wo)men, a center and a pivot. Players are allowed to take a maximum of 3 steps with the ball in their hand. However, they are allowed to bounce the ball. Each time they bounce the ball, they are allowed to take the maximum of 3 steps again.

Leon has set his sights on representing Eusoff in Touch Rugby, Tennis and Squash. It’s not too hard to see that he enjoys Touch Rugby as he can often be seen at the MPC during both Touch Rugby recreational sessions and trainings. His love for tennis extends to the glamorous tennis ladies as he cites Anna Ivanovic as THE lady to meet.  This is fitting for someone who ranks class and elegance as enduring traits of a sportswoman!
