Finals: EH vs SH

Venue: MPSH 5

It is not an exaggeration to label this the match of the century. Both the Eusoff and Sheares team had excellent players who possessed speed, agility, skill and experience. It was indeed the clash of the titans. Fortunately, the Eusoff basketball guys stepped it up, delivered and fought their way to a resounding victory that had many Eusoffians talking about it days after the match.

The intensity and excitement of the match was electrifying. Every Eusoffian was playing his absolute best; Jia Kai and his highly accurate shots, Wilson and his legendary burning, Jason and his formidable rebounds and fakes, Jun Han with his immortal assists and passes and the list goes on and on. Several substitutions were made from time to time but our performance was consistent and good throughout the match. We did a great job handling Sheares’ “mountainous foreign talent” through sheer hard work and team work. Credit definitely has to be given to the SH impossibly accurate three-pointer, player no. 1, who kept randomly and effortlessly throwing successful 3-point shots after 3-points shots. Unfortunately for the passionate Shearites, he alone was not enough to bring Eusoff down as our basketballers not only played hard but smart as well.

Jason and Wilson were on fire as usual as they delivered their all-time cool and formidable plays right in the opponent’s faces. “Namkor” was at the top of his game as he appeared to be everywhere on the court, always ready to support, attack and defend. He made several good cuts which were extremely hard for the opponents to defend and even if they did, a foul was committed. Our players communicated frequently and effectively on court as well which helped to create very smooth plays and good attacks as they swung the ball constantly, quickly and accurately, biding for the opportunistic moment to attempt a shot or cut. They worked very hard when it came to defence, forcing Sheares to attempt 3-pointers as cutting in was difficult. They held on to and treasured every possession as much as possible given the tight scores.

As in any other games, the presence of supporters is very important and on this day, the number of supporters is record-breaking by Eusoff’s standard. The supporters were behind the players every step of the way as they shouted words of encouragement at the top of their lungs. It was definitely highly motivating for the players who were evidently spurred on by the relentless cheers from Eusoff. The exciting game ended with a tremendous victory as all the Eusoff male basketballers ran to each other forming a tight circle in the middle of the court when the final whistle blew.

Coincidentally, today is Jia Kai’s birthday as well and this is definitely the best way of wishing him a very happy birthday! All the hard work paid off and accumulated into this highly deserving victory that was very helpful to our overall scores and to our quest for the overall championships! Well done EH basketball men!! You are Champions in Yellow!

With the Mens’ Championship title still up in the air with Sheares’ 4 point lead, a strong showing at the final Track events was needed. The Eusoff guys and girls did not disappoint and capped off a winning IHG campaign by bringing home both Golds for the Track events for the first time since 2005/06. Both guys’ and girls’ captains Tony and Jessica were determined to make the most of the fact that they had strong runners from the national teams this year, and certainly trained hard. Their effort is clearly seen in how, with the exception of 3rd for the 4×100m girls, they managed a nearly clean sweep of all the track events on the last day of the IHG.

4×100m girls: Jessica, Judith, Dora, Yan Lin - 3rd Place

As the Captain of the girls’ team, it was only fitting that Jessica was the first runner in her pet event, the 4×100m relay. Jessica got off to a good start, but Eusoff’s lane placement meant that it was difficult for us to take the lead in the first 100m, and Eusoff was in 4th place, closely behind 3rd placed TH. A smooth passing of the baton to Judith and strong running from her saw Eusoff overtake SH to emerge in 3rd place behind KR and TH. Judith did her best to close the gap and maintained her 3rd place position as she passed off to Dora, who did well to briefly propel Eusoff to 2nd place, but the KR and TH runners proved to be too strong as Eusoff slipped back into 3rd place by the time the baton was passed to Yan Lin, our national team relay runner and anchor. Despite a solid 100m from Yan Lin, the gap between KR and TH proved too great for her to overcome and Eusoff had to settle for 3rd place in the first track event of the day.

4×100m guys: Tony, Amir, Boon Keng, Hakeem - 1st Place

Like Jessica, Tony also started off as the first runner for the 4×100m relay for the guys. The false start at the beginning resulted in some anxiety as some of the runners had already ran their 100m before the airhorn was sounded to indicate the false start. In any case, the race proceeded smoothly after that, and again, due to the lane placement, Eusoff was unable to take the lead in the first 100m of a close race, and was in last place as Tony handed the baton to Amir. As the race progressed, the lane differences started to clear up, as evident by how Amir managed to push Eusoff forward into 3rd place before passing off to Boon Keng, whose robust strides saw him over take RH to closely follow behind the KR runner, who was in 1st place. It was an extremely close race, but that became history as soon as Hakeem, our national team runner, took the baton from Boon Keng. The other runners proved to be no match for Hakeem, as he powered his way past the KR runner to take a lead that was big enough for Hakeem to even have time to do a ‘Usain Bolt’ and pump his fist in the air on his way to the finishing line - a move that elicited huge cheers from the Eusoff crowd as they savoured the first (out of many) wins of that day.

4×400m girls: Xie Ying, Gloria, Yan Lin, Jasmine - 1st Place

While the 4×400m girls is not usually a strong event of the girls’ track team, this year’s stronger team meant that there was some hope that we could break our duck this time. XY, our first runner, started off well but RH managed to take an initial lead, leaving Eusoff in 2nd place… for all of 30 seconds, as XY’s pace saw her overtake RH to grab 1st place. Meanwhile, KR was starting to follow close behind, as was the case when Gloria took over from XY. KR’s second runner proved to be a formidable opponent as she slowly caught up with Gloria, and both Eusoff and KR were neck-to-neck as Gloria passed the baton to her secondary school teammate, Yan Lin. Our captain from last year managed to open up a marginal lead over KR around the first bend, but her strength showed over the last 300m as she slowly opened up a lead that became quite unassailable by the time she entered the last 100m to pass off to Jasmine. A basketballer by trade, Jasmine proved that she was also a great runner as she maintained the lead over KR to see Eusoff clinch 1st for the 4×400m girls for the first time in a long time. Well run, girls!

4×400m guys: Jasmeet, Renji, Jonathan Suen, Hakeem - 1st Place

The 4×400m guys’ relay also proved to be a close race at the earlier legs, as there was little to separate Jasmeet and the KR runner in the first leg of the relay, which ended with Jasmeet taking a marginal lead over KR as he passed the baton to Renji. The race continued to be quite a close one, as while Renji opened up a bigger lead in the first 300m of the race, the KR runner looked to be close to catching up with Renji in the last bend. Fortunately, Renji prevailed to maintain his lead in the last 100m before handing the baton to Jonathan Suen. As one of the DY Top 10 Bachelors, Suen proved that he was not just about looks as he greatly widened the gap between him and the KR runner, leaving Eusoff firmly in the lead as he passed off to Hakeem. As usual, Hakeem was his lean, mean running machine self as he left his opponents in the dust to seal the Eusoff’s third victory of the day.

Mixed medley: Jessica, Rasul, Elfi, Judith, Weiwei, Sunny - First Place

The last event of the IHG was a fitting mixed relay, which has both guys and girls running varying distances consisting of two 100m legs and 200m, 400m and two 800m legs. Captain Jessica featured once again in the 100m, and she did well to take 3rd place before Rasul took over for the next 100m of the medley. KR and SH were initially in the lead, but Rasul managed to power past SH to place Eusoff in 2nd, behind KR. Elfi took over, and ran magnificently in the 200m leg as he overtook KR to give Eusoff the lead for the first time in the medley. He further opened up the gap before handing the baton to Judith. Despite this being the second time she was running that day, she kept up a good pace and ran a good 400m to keep Eusoff in 1st place. Weiwei then embarked on the first of the 800m legs of the medley, and showed great determination to hang on despite KR almost catching up with her at one point in time. Clearly, the cheers from Eusoffians helped spur her on as she sped up to increase her lead as she finished up the first 400m of the race. By the 700m mark, Weiwei had once again opened up a good lead as the KR runner started to falter while the TH runner caught up. Finally, our last runner and NUS Sportsman of the Year, Sunny, proceeded to take off like a bullet for the last 800m and garner Eusoff its first Golden Track double in three years. Indeed, this medley exemplified Eusoff’s journey to the IHG title - when the going got tough, we just got tougher. Once again, congrats on a stellar performance from all Eusoffians!
