Wasting Talent is a Crime!

Story Type:
Event Write-up

By Muhammad Ahad

“Wasting talent is a crime!” Indeed, as reflected by this witty slogan, TalentCrime was initiated to serve as a platform for all Eusoffians to showcase their raw talents.

Held last Thursday, the event undoubtedly proved quite entertaining for those present. The night was brought to a roaring start by the Eusoff Choir witrh the Eusoff Anthem and "What a Wonderful World".
Next up, the International Relations Committee (IRC) did a round of introduction for the wide variety of international food that was prepared for the audience by the committee members themselves.
Our first band performance of the night was led by the new band Soul High with their own rendition of  "Backstreet boys - As Long As You Love me" and "我有初恋了-五月天".

Followed by Jit-vern and his solo performance of "This is the moment", the Individual-category champions DDRRMP to the Z, quickly warmed the crowd up with their rock numbers.

Everyone was mesmerized by the unique performances of the individual groups as well as the various blocks, in particular defending champion B-block’s act – which was completely in a league of its own.

Represented by about 20 B-blockers, this year’s TalentCrime champions gave their all in a laudable performance involving their own brand of video streaming website – EuTube. Complete with a set that resembled a 3-D website, the act provided a wholesome visual and audio experience for the audience.

Publicity for TalentCrime was as impressive as the event itself. For a substantial period of time, the entire Eusoff Hall was turned into a giant crime scene with random demarcations of corpses. Such a literal interpretation of the event added an aura of forensic mystery to it, and contributed immensely to the event’s popularity.

Talent Crime was appreciated by every Eusoffian and even the Resident Fellows expressed unusual interest – now everyone seems to be eagerly awaiting the next showcase!

A New Beginning – EH Style

Sporting fanatics, listen up – fancy having access to sports channels like ESPN and STAR SPORTS, right in the comfort of your second home?

Well, this will no longer be a far-fetched dream, with the new Junior Common Room Committee (JCRC) announcing the screening of sports programmes in the Blue Oyster Room every weekend, as part of their game plan for the academic year ahead – in a bid to make Eusoff a better home for all.

“As members of the JCRC, we are leading to serve and serving to lead… we’re your campus leaders, cheerleaders, fire-fighters, and secretly your greatest, craziest fans too!” proclaimed incoming JCRC president Allan Alex Sim in his uplifting address during the 21st JCRC Investiture dinner on Thursday.

On top of that, he also spoke about their visions for the new year, which includes having the courage to initiate novelties, beginning with the end in mind, as well as standing together as one.

“In going the distance, we stand strong as one,” he said. “We’re all wearing yellow now, and when the sun shines on us, we will be golden!”

As outgoing president Sim Jit Vern puts it best in his impromptu speech, “our days are numbered (in hall), so make every single day count, Eusoff!”

Indeed, it was an interesting night – a great way to officially kick-start the new year for the 21st JCRC.

Revelation - Dance Production Open Comm. Supper

From the sensible to the wacky, to the disciplined to the sultry – these are the unique bunch of characters that have came to make up the much-awaited plot of the annual Eusoff Dance Production (DP).

At the first full committee gathering for the DP crew on Wednesday, members were not only treated to a sumptuous spread of food, but also a firsthand glimpse of the performance script for their big night.

Truly the revelation of the gathering, the basic storyline, including the characters as well as the set designs, was presented to an eager team by the scriptwriters.

The play essentially follows the life of a young man John, who meets several imaginary people along the way, all with their distinctive personalities. It explores his relationship with these people, and how he copes with balancing the imaginary and reality.

While there are comedic moments, the story also touches on the aspect of insanity – which adds a dash of darkness to it.

Climatic and heart wrenching dances, along with elaborate sets and props will also serve to enhance the visual experience for the audience.

With the combined efforts of freshmen, seniors and alumni, DP sure looks set to have another successful year ahead!

IBG closes with a bang

It was a fun-filled night in Eusoff Hall on Wednesday as the annual Inter-Block Games (IBG) drew to an end with a rapturous closing ceremony.

Kicking off with a tributary film incorporating photographs of the games held, the event brought back fond memories of the teamwork shared by players during the past couple of weeks, as well as the quirky moments witnessed by many.

The slideshow was followed by our Hall Master AP Tan Tin Wee’s speech, which was full of encouragement and enthusiasm, especially aimed at bringing all Eusoffians together in support of the upcoming Inter-Hall Games (IHG).

Junior Common Room Committee (JCRC) president Allen Alex Sim then ended the night with a speech of his own. Truly deriving from the heart, it reminded everyone present of one very important point – that we are all Eusoffians, and the golden colour of champions is within us all.

“Come IHG, we will let NUS see our true colours and capabilities!” he declared.

His speech was received by a roaring round of applause and led way to the IBG prize giving ceremony, where Block A walked away the overall winner.

It was a hilarious and appropriate ending to IBG, as it encompassed the true nature of Eusoffians – always striving for excellence, but with an added sense of humour.
